Breaking Barriers: The Impossible Became Possible Last Week

Screen Shot 2015-08-25 at 2.30.56 PMLast week women, men and our society passed a major milestone on the way to recognizing that performance is what matters, not hard held paradigms or prejudice, when two amazing Army officers were the first females to graduate from the grueling Army Ranger school. This accomplishment is remarkable for three reasons:

First, remaining true the standards required to fulfill its combat mission, the Army did not change or lower it physical standards to meet a quota for women to join the Ranger ranks: these women met and surpassed the existing tough requirements.  This is a marked change in perspective. Instead of excluding groups of people based on paradigm or prejudice, the Army changed its perspective to one that allows anyone in who meets the Ranger standards.

Second, the male officers were highly supportive of these two remarkable women.  They, too, on an individual level, came to appreciate the performance of two soldiers instead of two women.  Once women, or any group of people for that matter, are recognized for what they can do instead of what perceptions of their gender limit them from doing, then the final barrier to achieving equality will break down.

Third, these remarkable women did not let anything stop them along their pursuit of excellence.  They brought all they had to the game: drive, leadership, talent, fitness, stamina and determination and they did what they set out to do. They did not pursue Ranger school with an equal rights agenda: they pursued Ranger school because they wanted to improve themselves and serve others. Once the Army broke through its paradigms and prejudices, these women were ready to go.

Colman Coaching and Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce together want to continue breaking down barriers by helping women become outstanding leaders, so that when opportunity comes their way, women will be the best candidates based on their performance to lead.  Join us in our Executive Women’s Leadership Forum to help you take advantage of the many outstanding opportunities coming your way.
